Trapping can be a key part of mitigating wildlife conflicts, although it is not always necessary. To trap nuisance wildlife requires not just a license, but knowledge of a wide variety of wildlife and their habits and habitats. It is often tempting for homeowners to consider doing the trapping themselves. While that certainly is an option, there are a few things to consider
- 1Equipment - you can pick up cheap cage traps, but as with most other things, you get what you pay for. Cheap traps have larger holes between bars, which allows a trapped animal to reach out and grab anything it can reach, destroying it! Cheap traps can also fail when pitted with extremely strong animals, namely armadillos, and an animal that has escaped one trap will be harder to catch in another.
- 2Making a catch - of course this is the goal but what are you going to do with an animal after you catch it? Per state law you must have landowner permission to release an animal on someone else's land. If you have permission can you safely transport it there, often trapped animals will urinate and defecate in a trap, do you want to put that in your vehicle, and can you handle the trap without getting scratched or clawed by the animal, which could put you at risk for potential diseases that wildlife carry.
- 3Permanently fixed - if you are having issues with wildlife in your home, just removing the offending critter isn't the final answer. The crucial aspect of the process is called Exclusion - which means ensuring all potential entry points are sealed to prevent another animal from getting in. If you aren't sealing the entry points the you are destined to continue repeating the process
I have been trapping since I was a kid. I've spent countless hours learning to read sign, watching, and studying wildlife to learn their habits. I have a wide variety of trapping equipment and know the best tools to safely and effectively get the job done. Not only that but I can safely and effectively REMOVE the animal once it is trapped.
Careful attention must be paid to where and how the trap is set, so as to avoid further damage. It is also important to know how to properly bait a trap to ensure that the target species is caught. We are not trapping just any animal, we are trapping a specific animal that is causing an issue.
